Introduction / History

The Ghayavi are an indigenous people of Papua New Guinea, located along the north coast of Goodenough Bay in Milne Bay Province. They are part of the wider Austronesian cultural and linguistic family, and their language (also called Boanai) remains actively used in daily life.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life is typically village-based, centered on subsistence farming, fishing, and small-scale trade common to coastal Papua New Guinea communities. Families are close-knit, with strong kinship ties shaping daily responsibilities and decision-making. Traditional foods include root crops, fish, and tropical fruits, and communal gatherings often accompany celebrations, reinforcing social unity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Ghayavi identify as Christian, though elements of traditional beliefs remain influential in some communities. Scripture portions and audio resources exist in their language, but a complete Bible is not yet available, which limits deeper discipleship and teaching.

What Are Their Needs?

Greater access to full Scripture in their language would strengthen spiritual growth and maturity. Leadership development is important so local believers can guide churches effectively. Continued discipleship is needed to help integrate biblical truth with everyday life and replace remaining traditional practices.

Prayer Items

Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Ghayavi language.
Pray asking God to raise strong local leaders and teachers.
Pray for unity among believers and transformation of remaining traditional beliefs.
Pray that the Ghayavi Christians will faithfully preach the gospel to their people and the regions beyond.
Pray asking God for improved living conditions, education, and sustainable livelihoods alongside spiritual growth.
